Personality

Gonpo is much more than simply a Shiba Inu to me. Heis a special companion who already had a place in my heart before he was evenborn. Before his birth, I often whispered to his mother’s belly that I wishedfor a black puppy — a dog I could take with me into the dog world, a dog whowould work beside me, become part of my family, and truly belong with us.

Even his name reflects the special role he seems to carry.Gonpo’s name is connected to the idea of a teacher and protector, and the moreI get to know him, the more I feel that this name truly belongs to him.

Gonpo is incredibly energetic, joyful, and just a little bitcrazy in the best possible way. If he were a person, he would be the kind ofperson who immediately notices that you have had a long or difficult day anddoes everything he can to make you smile again. It would not matter whether hehad to be silly, jump around, play, or simply stay close to you. Somehow, hewould always find a way to make your day a little better.

But behind that playful personality, there is something muchdeeper.

Gonpo is an extremely attentive and devoted dog. When we aretogether, I often feel that he is watching every movement I make. With bright, shining eyes, he waits to see what the next task will be, what I will ask fromhim, or what we are going to do together. His expression almost seems to ask:

“What are we doing now? How can I help?”

It does not really matter to him whether we are doingserious training, a simple exercise, or complete nonsense. If we are doing ittogether, that is enough for Gonpo.

One of his most beautiful qualities is the specialconnection he builds with his person. I love walking with him in the forestand, when it is safe, sometimes letting him explore without a leash. There maybe countless interesting scents and distractions around him, yet I always feelthat one eye is still on me. He keeps track of where I am, what I am doing, andwhat I may ask of him next.

He moves freely, explores, and enjoys the world around him,but he never forgets that we are there together.

That combination of independence and connection describesGonpo very well.

He also loves to communicate. Gonpo is a truly “talkative”Shiba. Through little sounds, grumbles, playful complaints, happy noises, andbody language, he makes it very clear whether he likes something, dislikessomething, or simply wants a little more attention.

Within the family, he has built his own specialrelationships.

For example, he has developed a small morning ritual with mydaughter. Gonpo approaches her, she holds out her hand and pets him, and inreturn he gives her a few little licks or “kisses.” Afterwards, he oftenwatches her with curiosity, almost as if he is checking what she is doing, where she is going, and whether everything is all right.

His protective nature is not pushy.

It is watchful.

Gonpo also enjoys playing with other dogs, especially dogsthat are smaller than he is. That is when his inner clown really appears. Hebecomes playful, bouncy, cheerful, and completely full of life.

At the same time, Gonpo is already beginning to show theconfident and protective side of his personality that I believe will becomestronger as he matures. He is still young, so his funny and playful characteris the most visible right now, but when the situation calls for it, he cansuddenly become a very different dog.

His deep voice and confident presence immediately show thatthere is strength, courage, and a natural protective instinct inside him.

He does not look for conflict.

But when you truly need him, he is there.

From a very young age, Gonpo has loved working with me. Whenwe began his socialization and first training sessions, it quickly becameobvious how much he enjoyed cooperation. It did not matter whether we werelearning something new or repeating an exercise he already knew.

What mattered to him was that we went outside, workedtogether, and that he was part of something.

He watched.

He waited.

He tried.

And he completed his tasks with incredible enthusiasm.

Water is another great love of his. Gonpo absolutely lovesplaying in it, moving through it, and simply enjoying himself. It fits hispersonality perfectly: curious, active, happy, and always ready for anotheradventure.

However, something happened when Gonpo was still very youngthat revealed even more about his character.

When we moved to Canada, I almost lost him. It became anextremely difficult and emotional situation, and we were given informationabout his condition that made it seem as though he had very little chance.Eventually, people who truly cared took the time to look more closely at whatwas happening, and Gonpo received the veterinary care he needed.

His life was saved.

After that, he spent several months away from us whilerecovering and adapting to a different environment.

For me, that period was an emotional roller coaster.

But Gonpo showed something completely different throughoutit.

Strength.

Resilience.

Adaptability.

And an incredible joy for life that did not disappear evenduring difficult circumstances.

Even when his life reached such a serious turning point, heremained the same cheerful, positive, curious soul who was always ready to moveforward.

Six months later, he was finally able to join the rest ofthe pack again.

That experience only strengthened what I had already feltabout him.

Gonpo is not only playful and loving.

He is also a fighter.

A dog with an incredibly strong spirit.

And perhaps that is why his name fits him so perfectly.

A teacher, because he constantly reminds me that even duringdifficult moments, it is possible to remain curious, open, and positive.

A healer, because his presence alone can make a difficultday feel lighter.

And a protector, because when you need him, he is simplythere beside you.

Gonpo is still young, and I know his personality willcontinue to mature over the coming years. The funny, playful boy will graduallygrow into a confident and powerful adult male.

But I hope he never loses one thing:

that sparkle in his eyes when he looks at me and seems toask,

“What are we going to do together now?”
